In this instalment we meet artist, entrepreneur and content creator Joanne Mooney. “I would describe my style as eclectic, colourful and fun. My fashion choices have always been rooted in creativity. I believe anyone can be creative – it’s necessary for our wellbeing and takes our mind off the fast pace of life.” “I grew up wearing handmade dresses and knitted socks. As a teenager, I was a Goth and then a punk. Over the years, these early influences evolved into my own distinctive style: quirky and unique, with an overriding love for gingham! Lately, my style has become even more personal and intentional. I like to design one-of-a-kind outfits. I particularly enjoy inspiring others to embrace their own creativity and host monthly punch needle workshops inwhich features beautiful, unexpected colour combinations and graphics. I designed the two-piece and my mam put it together. The original textile designer messaged me on Instagram and admired the transformation! The most recent item I bought was a denim trouser suit from J Crew that I paired with a long-sleeve pussy-bow top from Dunnes Stores. I try to shop my own wardrobe as much as possible, but sometimes a piece speaks to you. I know I’ll get so much wear out of this outfit. I have a few sentimental pieces, but my favourites are the crochet cardigans, tank tops, bags and jumpers my mam made for me over the years. Handmade items are deeply meaningful – they hold love, time and care in every stitch. I treasure them and will keep them forever. Mam is 85 and has been sewing all her life, like my granny before her. Now, she’s passing that skill on to me. For my 50th birthday, my daughters gave me a sewing machine, so I’m learning to make my own clothes, which I’m very excited about. There’s something so special about wearing something you’ve made yourself. My favourite places to find hidden gems are in high street stores and charity shops. For me, a great outfit is all about mixing and making it your own. With thrifting, you can find one-of-a-kind treasures such as this pink dress. The punch needle balloons were a commission for a nursery.for just a few euros. It was tucked away on a rail, but when I tried it on it fit like a dream. The best part? Inside the pocket, I found an old handwritten shopping list, proof that this dress had lived a whole life before me. I like to imagine the woman who wore it before, maybe styling it with funky glasses and a red lip. (I wearAs for good investments, I treated myself to some red buckle Ganni flats last year and they’re worth every penny, adding the perfect pop of colour to any outfit. They’re so versatile and have definitely earned their keep! I love this yellow coat from Monki and I made the pom pom scarf. I might launch a slow fashion brand in the future.My lilac tulle dress has an interesting, if embarrassing, provenance. My daughter ordered it online, but she didn’t like it. I ordered the same dress in a larger size and added lots of extra tulle to make it look fabulous. I wore it for an awards night and later sold it on Vinted. The least “fashion” thing I own is probably my old, oversized Aran cardigan made by my late aunt. It’s so soft, warm and works with everything. My most hardworking accessory has to be my glasses: function meets fashion. I’m lusting after a pair of Tom Ford specs which would instantly elevate my everyday look.
