Scottie Scheffler overcame a three-shot deficit against Viktor Hovland to win the Tour Championship by three strokes, earning his second FedEx Cup title and surpassing Tiger Woods atop the PGA Tour career money list.
Scottie Scheffler joined golf royalty as one of the few competitors to win multiple FedEx Cup championships when he came from behind to capture the Tour Championship in the finale of the playoffs at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.
Scheffler, the world number one player and point standings leader, shot a four-under-par 66 to finish at sixteen-under 264, three shots ahead of Viktor Hovland. It was the second Tour Championship victory in three years for Scheffler, who also won the event in 2024. Hovland, the 2023 champion, could not hold on to a one-stroke lead heading into the final round. He shot two over to finish alone in second place at thirteen under.
Rory McIlroy finished in a share of fourth position after a closing one-under 69. With his victory, Scheffler joined a select group of players who have won multiple FedEx Cup titles. McIlroy won the FedEx Cup three times in his career, in 2016, 2019 and 2022, while Tiger Woods captured it twice, in 2007 and 2009. Scheffler also overtook Woods for the top spot on the PGA Tour career money list.
With the ten million dollar first prize from the Tour Championship, Scheffler now stands at the top with total earnings of 130,390,661 dollars. Woods previously held the top spot with 120,999,166 dollars. The final round featured a back and forth battle between Scheffler and Hovland, with Scheffler playing two groups ahead of his rival. Hovland, at fifteen under, led Scheffler by three strokes going into Sunday's action.
Scheffler started strong by hitting his tee shot on the par-3 second hole to within two inches of the cup. The birdie moved him to one stroke behind Ryan Gerard and two behind Hovland before the leaders even teed off. Scheffler then birdied the fourth to tie for the lead with Hovland at fourteen under, after Hovland bogeyed his opening hole. Gerard double-bogeyed the opening hole to fall behind.
Scheffler bogeyed the seventh but birdied the eighth to move back to fourteen under and tied with Hovland. Hovland birdied the eighth to move back to fifteen under and retake the solo lead. Scheffler birdied the tenth to force another tie, then made a five-footer for birdie at the thirteenth to move to sixteen under and take the solo lead for the first time.
He gave the lead back with a bogey on the fourteenth after a drive into the rough. The lead grew to two strokes after Scheffler birdied the sixteenth, hitting out of a fairway bunker to return to sixteen under. While Scheffler was playing the eighteenth, Hovland bogeyed the seventeenth to fall three shots back after overshooting the green from 103 yards with a lob wedge. Scheffler parred the eighteenth, securing a comfortable lead with one hole remaining for his rival.
Hovland went on to par the eighteenth as well. No one else seriously challenged the leading pair down the stretch. Of the others in the final three pairings, Gerard shot a two-over 72 and finished third at twelve under. Adam Scott of Australia also shot 72 and finished at ten under, tied for eleventh.
Chris Gotterup and Sweden's Ludvig Aberg each carded a one-over 71 and finished tied for fourth at eleven under along with McIlroy. They were joined by England's Alex Fitzpatrick, who shot 66, Jacob Bridgerman with 68, Australian Min Woo Lee with 68 and Russell Henley with 68.
With his third victory of the season, including two in the playoffs, and ten top-three finishes, Scheffler strengthened his case for the PGA Tour Player of the Year award, cementing his status at the top of the rankings and on the career money list
