‘We can’t cancel the Alamo’: African American scholar sees Alamo’s potential for racial reconciliation

But another new book set for release this spring is likely to reignite the debate. “The Alamo: A Cradle of Lies, Slavery and White Supremacy,” by historian and civil rights leader Mario Marcel Salas, is available for pre-sale orders atLatimore views slavery as one issue, but not the only one, in the war for Texas independence.
It touches on the lives and faith stories of Phillis Wheatley, who was enslaved for much of her life but became the first published African American poet in 1773; Lott Carey and William Crane, a Black man born into slavery and a white businessman who worked together to help African Americans in Virginia in the early 1800s; and Fannie Lou Hamer, who was raised in a sharecropper family and became a 1960s civil rights leader.
Yet historically, Black people in San Antonio have gathered in Alamo Plaza or held parades that passed through it in celebration of Juneteenth — the end of slavery in Texas after the Civil War.
