A new study on school phone bans has revealed that they have a minimal impact on overall phone usage among students. While bans did reduce phone and social media time by about 30-40 minutes daily, the effect was not substantial enough to change their overall usage patterns. The study's authors emphasize that relying solely on school bans is insufficient to address the issue of excessive phone use and its potential consequences for mental health, physical activity, sleep, school performance, and behaviour.
“They lowered it by a small amount of time, but this was not enough to change their overall levels of use," said the study's lead author.The authors of a study on school phone bans have admitted they were “surprised” to learn they have little impact on children.“They lowered it by a small amount of time, but this was not enough to change their overall levels of use.”According to Dr Goodyer, phone bans reduced students' phone and social media by around 30 or 40 minutes a day.
“I think what we’re suggesting is not that necessarily we’re against phone bans or that phone bans don’t work,” she said.“We can’t put all the responsibility onto schools and think that the issue with phones is going to be resolved by just blocking them in schools.”“If it’s delaying sleep or it’s reducing physical activity as well then that’s a bigger concern,” she said.
