A Co Mayo secondary school has paid tribute to a former pupil who died in a road accident at the weekend.
St Colman's College in Claremorris said in a social media post this evening that staff learned with"deep sadness" about the death of 17-year-old Vikaris Gudaitis.
Vikaris died on Saturday evening after he was hit by a car on the N17 at Barnacarroll in Claremorris at around 9.20pm. In a social media post this evening, a statement from the school read:"It was with deep sadness that we learned about past-pupil Vikaris Gudaitis, 17, who was fatally injured on Saturday night last in a road traffic incident outside Claremorris.
"Originally from Lithuania, Vikaris and his family have lived in the south Mayo community for many years. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gudaitis family at this very difficult time. May Vikaris rest in peace."The figure is 16 people more than the number of people who died in the same period last year.
