Scouts NI hosted a Big Sleep Out in Co Down on Saturday night to raise much needed funds for the Simon Community NI, while raising awareness about homelessness.Scout Centre saw almost 600 young people aged between 10.5 and 18 and their leaders, from right across Northern Ireland, sleeping outside without any shelter at all, and all in one of the coldest months of the year.
The money raised will help the Simon Community NI to continue their work to provide shelter and support to those with no home.Emma Stevenson, Scouts NI |Programme & Development Officer said:"From Saturday to Sunday, 480 young people and 110 leaders slept rough in Crawfordsburn Scout Centre in order to raise money for the Simon Community.
"During the event the young people took part in a number of awareness activities to learn about homelessness and this included a talk from Amanda from the Simon Community. "The participants of the event then slept in sleeping bags and bivi bags and were able to raise the amazing total of £2,500 which was all donated to the Simon Community.
"This donation was made alongside food and toiletries that the Simon Community will use to build their welcome pacts which every person who avails of their services receives."For all the latest news, visit the Belfast Live homepage
