Séamus Coleman rejected Sheffield United after leaving Everton and is deciding whether to keep playing for Ireland at Euro 2028. The 37-year-old made the comments on the Stick to Football podcast.
Séamus Coleman has revealed that he rejected Sheffield United after ending his 17-year spell with Everton and is now deciding whether to continue playing so he can be available for Ireland at Euro 2028.
The 37-year-old said on the Stick to Football podcast that his decision will come very soon. Coleman ended his Everton career at the close of last season. He was contacted by Championship side Sheffield United once he finished up with the Premier League club. The Donegal man was also offered a coaching role at Everton.
He is now thinking about accepting another playing contract, however, because he wants to be in the mix for the European Championships in 2028. That tournament will be co-hosted by Ireland. On the Stick to Football podcast, Coleman was asked what he has been doing since leaving Everton. He replied: 'Not a lot.
I've been in Ireland for about six weeks, which was nice. I've been keeping fit and not stressing.
' He said he is not worried about the uncertainty around his next move. 'I'm not stressing, I'm quite laid back, I've had a good run and it was more so the Ireland stuff that has put a bit of doubt in my mind,' he added. The Ireland manager played a significant role in changing Coleman's plans. Coleman said: 'I was probably was 100% done at the end of the season until I spoke to the Ireland manager.
I'd done quite well in games and got close to the World Cup, and he spoke about being involved for the Euros - that's a couple of years away.
' That conversation planted a seed. Coleman then spoke with Sheffield United and met their manager, but the opportunity came too quickly after his Everton exit. He explained: 'But it planted a seed, I spoke with the club, met the manager and felt a bit soon after leaving Everton.
' He did not want to delay Sheffield United while they tried to bring in players. 'I didn't want to keep them hanging on or mess them around and get their players in - that was Sheffield United,' Coleman said. Coleman was complimentary about Sheffield United. He said: 'The manager was great, a little bit old school, the club was a good setup, but I didn't want to keep them hanging on and decided it just wasn't right.
' The timing was also strange because of how quickly people got in touch after such a long association with Everton. 'Just because I'd been somewhere so long and it came quick, it was too quick. I'd finished with Ireland and they'd got on the phone a couple of days later. It just didn't feel right,' he said.
Since then, Coleman has been training on his own while he waits for clarity.
'I'm training myself, but it's not the same, trying to stay as fit as I can,' he said. With the transfer window closed, he thinks the picture could become clearer. He expects to make a final decision soon.
'Now the window is closed it might open up a little bit but I'll be making a decision, very, very soon. If it wasn't for the Ireland stuff my decision would be made,' Coleman said. The possibility of playing at a home European Championship has kept his career open.
