'It’s too easy to be intimidated by Kerry’s aura and history. Since the noughties, their record has been nothing special.'
There is only one intercounty football game left in 2024 —and what a pairing it is. Galway v Armagh in an All-Ireland final for the first time in the history of the GAA .
Read next: Jim McGuinness unhappy with referee decisions as Donegal miss out on All-Ireland final berth Not many teams can win big Championship games when hit with those kind of challenges. But Joyce hit the nail on the head when he talked about his team being further down the road than Donegal. That’s ignoring the clear signs that both Dublin and Kerry weren’t anywhere near as strong as we thought they were. The Championship looks likely to be moving into a period where it is far more open than in the past decade.
Maybe it was that bit more experience Galway have that proved crucial in the end. Most of their players came close to winning the All-Ireland two years ago. Patrick McBrearty and Ryan McHugh were the only Donegal players in a semi-final before. This was a game where Damien Comer, Cillian McDaid and Shane Walsh weren’t at their best but Galway still won. That says a lot about the panel that Joyce has now.
McGuinness has had better days on the sideline, I think. McBrearty has been regularly taken off - or not started - in this Championship. But this was one of his better games and, in such a tight match, he surely should have been left on the pitch. McBrearty has hit clutch scores at the death before, I think McGuinness might regret taking him off.
