‘I wish he wasn’t the lost treasure.’
Hunter Lewis became a student pilot during the pandemic. He went missing in Trinidad Harbor on Jan. 30 while setting up an elaborate treasure hunt via canoe.Hunter Lewis had big plans for his Dec. 30 canoe trip out on Trinidad Bay in Humboldt County. The 21-year-old junior at California State University Long Beach was home in Blue Lake, California, for the holidays and had engineered an incredibly elaborate treasure hunt for his family and friends.
Paddling his family’s 15-foot green canoe out toward a sea stack called Pilot Rock, Lewis intended to hide the final treasure in a secret location. In a tragic twist of events, though, hundreds of people are now searching for Lewis himself. “It’s so epic what he did, and yet, I wish he wasn’t the lost treasure,” Corey Lewis said, his voice shaking. “I’m sorry. I’m trying to hold it together.”
Lewis was reported missing at around 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 30, and multiple agencies responded, including Humboldt County Sheriff’s Special Services deputies, the Humboldt County Search and Rescue Posse, the U.S. Coast Guard and California State Parks. A Coast Guard helicopter was called in, along with a Coast Guard cutter and small boats, and authorities were also searching on foot.
