The seaside pub that's 'bigger on the inside' where 'BrewDog' is a swear word and the choice is endless
Whether it's beer from supermarkets, large international breweries, or smaller independent shops, the demand for craft beer has gone through the roof. However, according to official Insolvency Service statistics analysed by Mazars, a number of UK breweries that have gone out of business has tripled in the past year.
I visited at the weekend and sampled the delights of the independent breweries that the Hop Shoppe had to offer. Although it doesn't look as big from the front, inside the bar is deceptively spacious and there's a strong attention to detail, with fairy lights hung from the wall and beer mats and posters covering every other inch.
With this in mind, I decide to ask the barmaid what someone who unashamedly enjoys a Brewdog IPA would like. I'm greeted with a guffaw and told "not to swear" - they don't like mentions of international breweries like them, which I find charming, after all independent is often best. However, there are plenty of Lancashire goodies on offer. For example, there's currently Area Codes, a Pale Ale from Rivington and a Lof Pilsner and Smoove Bitter, both from Farm Yard Brewing Company in Cockerham.
