A new trend of 'seat squatting' is causing chaos on flights, with passengers brazenly claiming empty seats without permission. Viral videos and online forums are filled with stories of passengers being confronted by seat squatters who refuse to move.

Irish air travellers are being warned about the new 'seat squatting' trend, where individuals slyly grab empty spots on flights without asking crew or completing the boarding process – betting that the rightful occupants won't cause a fuss. Shannon Ella, an influencer, saw her travel ordeal turn into a viral TikTok video, amassing over 212,000 views, when a man swiped her seat and adamantly refused to move, presuming she'd simply concede.

In disbelief, she asked: 'Is that a thing that people are doing on planes now? They just sit in your seat and just go like, 'no, it's mine, I sat there first so minesies? ''. Her clip has opened the floodgates for viewers to share their own encounters with 'seat squatters.' One person recounted how giving their children to a squatter quickly solved the issue. A TikTok comment from Olivia, a flight attendant, confirms that staff will enforce assigned seating when issues arise. Olivia on TikTok explained: 'I'm a flight attendant and once a passenger says someone is in my seat, I 100% make them move to their assigned seat.' The internet is brimming with such anecdotes, including an Express report of a traveller discovering three 'seat squatters' in one trip, even one who brazenly claimed a completely different seat than allocated. Birmingham Live also disclosed a stubborn squatter in 18A insisting on swapping a middle seat for a window one, alongside a couple seated at 24C and D who boldly took over seats 24A and B, reports the Irish Mirror. Similar stories are also appearing on Reddit forums. Suggestions flooded in on how to handle seat pinchers, with most saying there is no way they would not argue if someone was in their sea
