While renting can sometimes curtail a person’s creative flair, Jo has managed to make the space her own and create a serene oasis from city life that she never wants to leave

Sustainable journalist and GAFF Interiors founder Jo Linehan has been renting a 1920s house in the Dublin suburb of Marino with her boyfriend and fellow journalist Mike Sheridan for years. .Obviously when you’re renting it’s very hard to make a place your own, but we’re very lucky our landlady is relaxed so she kind of gave me free rein. It’s a 1920s house and the living room is beautiful and really simple. We have a stunning DFS couch that we literally live on.

It’s one of those rooms where at nighttime you can see the moon, in the morning you can see the sunrise. It’s really cosy and just has a lovely energy about it so I’m in here every chance I get, if I can do meetings from here I will.During the week I always come down to have my lunch here, then in the evening Mike and I finish every day by watching a movie or a series.

There’s damp, the fireplace is beautiful but it’s been boarded up by the landlord, I would love to be able to take that out and put a little stove in there. It’s got these beautiful high ceilings with a cornice that would be so nice if it was updated a little bit. There’s structural and practical changes I’d make if I could but in terms of decor I think it’s perfect.

Invest time into figuring out what you like and what you don’t, avoid the Instagram aesthetic, sometimes it looks great in a picture but it’s actually not what you want to live with. I took a lot of time planning this room, I took my time buying pieces, which is the most sustainable way to go.Which means I spend three days basically interviewing everyone on the interiors scene.
