A leading senator has spoken of his concerns at criminals having access to the deadly assault rifle Gardaí believe was used to kill Josh Itseli.

They have so-called level four body armour, which would protect them from the AR-15’s bullets. And they also carry HK416 assault rifles – which would be a match for the AR-15.
The weapon has been used in a number of deadly mass shootings there in recent years. It was used in the Sandy Hook school attack in Connecticut in 2012 in which 26 people were murdered – including 20 kids. He said: “It is a weapon that is synonymous with mass shootings in the United States. This is a ferocious weapon; it is a military grade weapon. It has a very, very high rate of fire. They are high velocity rounds.
