The association representing some of the country's most senior garda officers says almost half of its members could retire early if the financial issue preventing gardaí applying for the post of Deputy Garda Commissioner is not resolved.
Applications for the second most senior position in An Garda Síochána close at 3pm this afternoon and so far no senior garda officers have applied.
This has come to a head with the vacancy for Deputy Commissioner, the second most senior garda post with responsibility for all front line policing including organised crime, terrorism and covert intelligence. The senior officers say they have met the Minister for Justice Helen McEntee and called on the Government to address the issue but this has not been done.
It points out that the UK government has given a commitment to change its finance rules in its forthcoming budget after a similar problem arose there.
