A US air force judge has scheduled the trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged architect of the September 11th attacks, to begin on June 5th, 2028. The decision follows a US appeals court ruling that rejected plea agreements which would have spared Mohammed and his co-defendants the death penalty, reversing a previous military judge's approval of the deal.
A US air force judge on Wednesday ordered Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the accused mastermind of the September 11th, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, to stand trial starting June 5th, 2028.
The trial-scheduling order marks the latest milestone in a military prosecution beset by two decades of legal deadlock surrounding the four detainees held in Guantánamo Bay. Last month, a US appeals court refused to allow Mohammed and two co-defendants to plead guilty under agreements that would have spared them the death penalty, reversing previous decisions in support of the plea deal.
The defense had argued that the delay was unnecessary given the advanced stage of the case, but the judge noted the need to resolve pretrial issues before proceeding
