A member of the Heartless Felons gang who helped set up the September 2021 slaying of then-Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson’s grandson received a life sentence on Tuesday.
CLEVELAND, Ohio --
Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Deena Calabrese sentenced Shepard to life in prison with his first chance at parole after 33 years. Shepard, who Calabrese noted had multiple mental health diagnoses, declined to address the judge before learning his fate. No one from either Shepard’s family or Jackson’s family who were in the courtroom, including the former mayor, chose to speak before sentencing.on Oct. 31 of all four counts prosecutors brought against him: aggravated murder, murder and two counts of felonious assault.
Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Kristin Karkutt told Calabrese that police may never be able to identify the others who conspired with Shepard to kill Frank Q. Jackson. She said Shepard has refused to cooperate with the investigation, so he may be the only person to be held accountable.Prosecutors did not posit a motive for the killing during the trial.
