A settlement has been reached in a legal case against Galway-based GP Alex Michel regarding the death of Brian Coyne. Mr. Coyne's wife sued the GP after her husband died two days after complaining of chest pain during a consultation.
Four additional legal actions brought against General Practitioner Alex Michel concerning the death of Brian Coyne (42) have been resolved. Mr. Coyne's wife, Kathryn, administered CPR to him, but he was pronounced dead upon the arrival of paramedics. Kathryn Coyne's legal counsel, Miriam Reilly, representing Hamilton Sheahan solicitors, informed the court that Mr. Coyne had consulted a GP two days prior to his death, expressing complaints of chest pain.
The settlement, achieved through mediation, included a discount to account for litigation costs and the associated risks of causation. All claims in the case were denied. Mr. Coyne's widow, now residing in Kells, County Meath, initiated legal proceedings against Galway-based GP Alex Michel, who operates a practice in Renvyle and Tully, County Galway. The claims alleged that Mr. Coyne visited the GP's surgery on March 16th, 2022, reporting chest pain, but was not referred for further evaluation or treatment at a hospital. Two days later, according to the claims, Mr. Coyne woke up in the early hours to tend to their baby when he suddenly collapsed. His wife immediately called for assistance and performed CPR. The legal proceedings asserted that the GP surgery inadequately examined Mr. Coyne or thoroughly investigated his symptoms. There were further claims of failure to consider Mr. Coyne's medical history and the seriousness of his symptoms. Mr. Justice Paul Coffey acknowledged the settlement of the four nervous shock claims. Approving the €750,000 settlement and the allocation of the statutory mental distress payment of €35,000, the judge determined that the amounts were fair and reasonable considering the potential risks associated with further litigation
