Incident comes as Israel presses ahead with raid of Jenin refugee camp in occupied West Bank

A spokesman for the Israeli military said on Tuesday there had not been major fighting between soldiers and militants overnight, but that its forces were still operating in Jenin, and had 10 sites inside the camp they intended to search. “If we have friction with terrorists, we will fight with them as well,” he wrote on Twitter.

This year is already on course to be the deadliest in the West Bank – which Palestinians seek as the heart of a future state, but which Israel has occupied since 1967 – since the UN began collecting data in 2005. The impoverished Jenin camp, a stronghold for militants from several Palestinian factions, has become the centre of the violence, with Israeli forces raiding it repeatedly over the past 18 months.

“Palestinian paramedics have been forced to proceed on foot, in an area with active gunfire and drone strikes,” the group said.
