– some of the ways viruses can be made more powerful. This kind of research, combined with a superintelligent AI , could make an extremely hazardous combination.. Without the right data, an AI couldn’t produce a deadly supervirus in the ways that many AI worriers speculate it could. But biology is full of surprises, and a superintelligent entity could find deadly things in biology that we humans couldn’t have predicted. We’re back to robots.
An entire economy would develop around different superintelligent AIs interacting with each other, producing energy, resources, and even their own culture. Birth rates could collapse. We could develop AIs to look after us, but they would rapidly become too complex for us to understand or control. Perhaps one day, we simply die out. Or maybe the AIs decide amongst themselves that humanity is now irrelevant, and too much of a drain on resources. They decide to switch off the life-support machine.. We’re already moving in this direction, with declining birth rates across the world as technology advances and countries become richer and more developed. We’re also already replacing human labour with AI where possible.
