Parents everywhere know the headache of the carpool drop-off line. Some people just refuse to follow the rules, writes columnist Joy Sewing.
"It's the third week of school and people still don't understand how the pick-up/drop-off line goes, so I'm going to help y'all out," says Lateasha Witherspoon, in the car with her sons, Jason, 8, and Jeremiah, 6.“First things first, put your kids on the passenger side of the car,” Witherspoon says, noting if you have multiple children teach them how to"1, 2-step" and"slide" or"shuffle" out of the car.
Yet, at our neighborhood school and others across Houston, parents park in the no parking zone, or, worse, park in the center of the street, which is dangerous for the children. Many parents exit their cars to walk their kids to the school entrance, causing a carpool traffic jam. Or they speed through the school zone to get in front of the carpool line.
She also recommends not coming to a complete stop as kids jump out the car. This, I cannot consign on. My kids are too young and all we need is one good fall to ruin the day.
