Sinn Féin TD Maurice Quinlivan has said he would seek the party's nomination to run for mayor of Limerick.
In a statement this morning, Deputy Quinlivan said he wants to serve as a mayor"for all the people of Limerick". "The people of Limerick need a voice who will stand up for Limerick, who will work hard to ensure that we get a fair deal from Government and that our city and county work better for its people," he said.Mr Quinlivan was elected to Limerick City Council in 2009 and has been a TD for the Limerick City constituency since 2016.
Citizes of Cork and Waterford also voted in a plebiscite about whether they wanted to directly elect their own mayor, but the only place it was carried was Limerick by a slim margin of just over 3,500 votes. There will now be three tiers to local government in Limerick - the elected council, the mayor and the council director general, who is the former chief executive.The other candidates are businesswoman Helen O’Donnell, former CEO of Limerick Chamber Dee Ryan, former General Secretary of the Department of Finance John Moran, Green Party TD Brian Leddin, Social Democrats Councillor Elisa O'Donovan, and People Before Profit candidate Ruairi Fahy.
