UEFA has handed down fines to both Shamrock Rovers and Chelsea for fan misconduct during their Europa Conference League match on December 19. Rovers were penalized for chants related to the death of Queen Elizabeth II, while Chelsea faced a fine for an anti-IRA chant.
Shamrock Rovers and Chelsea have both been fined by UEFA following fan conduct during their Europa Conference League match at Stamford Bridge on December 19. The Hoops, who have earned over €5.5 million from their historic European campaign so far, will face Norwegian club Molde in the two-legged knockout round next month, with the first leg away on February 13.
However, UEFA has fined the Tallaght club €10,000 for 'transmitting a message that is not fit for a sports event' due to chants from some spectators about the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Chelsea were also fined €10,000 by UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) for an anti-IRA chant. The London giants secured a 5-1 victory, while Rovers, who had been unbeaten in the ECL group stages up to their final game, finished 10th overall. Chelsea topped the standings. Rovers confirmed the departure of 2023 title winner Markus Poom on Wednesday, marking a memorable week for the midfielder who also witnessed the birth of his child prior to the game. Poom's exit follows the earlier departures of Johnny Kenny, who returned to Celtic at the end of his loan spell, and Neil Farrugia, who has joined Barnsley.
