“She loves my clothes,” Peckham designer Richard Quinn says of his mother. “She’ll have early dibs on things going through production.”
in the house... I would read them back to front and try to memorise every designer’s name… We would watch music videos together and it was a stylish portal into cultural currency, beauty and style. We used to do loads of activities together. I would be taken to galleries, and she was very aware that she wanted me to learn about the arts and music.
“Delving into my family’s history has definitely deepened my relationship with my mum because now I’m so inquisitive [about] her life before I was a part of it. I like looking at old photos and asking her lots of questions, which I’m sure she probably gets tired of sometimes. I feel like I know so much more about her, and it makes me appreciate everything she has done for me... She [now] works with the business as the finance director, so can see/hear what we are doing daily.
“She made our clothes, as well as curtains and cushion covers, using a Singer sewing machine. She made our dresses, often all the same style and fabric. She always stressed that if we were making our own clothes, you could get better quality fabric. When we were old enough, we were bought a sewing machine to make our own clothes. Making one’s own clothes was sometimes a disappointment of fit, but on the whole great fun… [She taught me] to invest in quality, rather than quantity.

If I see the clothing from her past, that she kept so carefully throughout the years so I could wear them, I imagine she must have been a bombshell! Lots of ’90s Ralph Lauren crop tops, miniskirts, and tiny posh tennis dresses.
