Her budget has lost the confidence of the markets, the public and increasingly many in her own party. Her bid to take on the Treasury orthodoxy and avoid an Office for Budget Responsibility forecast has resulted just seven days later in Truss and her Chancellor meeting with the OBR and insisting they “value its scrutiny”.a series of polls pointing to electoral oblivion for the Conservatives
Ministers remarked to MPs how calm Truss was early in the week as she worked to finalise plans for conference. But the reality of how badly the fiscal event has landed has slowly hit the building. However, it also points to problems on the political side. Truss and Kwarteng kept the contents of the mini-Budget so tightly contained that people who could have pointed out the political risk of a tax cut for the richest distracting from help for the poorest were left out of the conversation.Laura Kuenssberg
