Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng have repeatedly rejected calls for a windfall tax on energy firms raking in record profits
October 4, 2022 10:43 pm
Ms Truss claimed in August: “I absolutely don’t support a windfall tax because it’s a Labour idea and it’s all about bashing business. It sends the wrong message to international investors and the public.” Referring to energy companies, he said: “That probably may then mean that governments need to tax people in this room to pay for it.
EU ministers have already imposed windfall taxes on energy companies with “abnormally high profits” as part of a package intended to help households – leaving the UK isolated in refusing to do so.earlier this year, but Ms Truss has refused to extend it further.
