Beverly D. Figueroa, 50, of Westfield, claims in court papers her superior officers suspended her without pay in November 2019, then terminated her employment in March 2021 after she made a slew of complaints about them.

Figueroa, who was hired in 2001, reported two discriminatory incidents she witnessed in 2018 at the county’s probation building in Elizabeth, according to the suit, filed in January in Superior Court of Union County.

“The officer refused to follow protocol when arresting this African American transgender woman,” the lawsuit states. “This officer’s dereliction of duty resulted in a ‘use-of-force’ incident.” The suit states after Figueroa reported the officer, her immediate supervisor “refused to allow to accurately document” the incident.

“ further enslaved these women by assigning them a large and excessive workload without any breaks or lunch for the entire day,” the lawsuit alleges. The lawsuit claims Figueroa also complained when she found out a pregnant inmate had been removed from the labor program, even though she provided officers with a doctor’s note that confirmed she could work without restrictions.
