MV Shingle ship seized by Customs officers could be Ireland’s first ever purpose-built wreck dive site
A ship which was seized by Customs officers with more than 32 million illegal cigarettes could be Ireland’s first ever purpose-built wreck dive site.
“There was a motion in Sligo County Council and Mayo County Council on Monday supporting this project. “There are wrecks in Donegal and in Kerry but they’re World War II wrecks that are quite deep and difficult. Cllr Loftus, who highlighted Malta as a tourism example where 40 ships have been sunk around the coast, believes the project could cost between €1.5million and €2million.
Marine life can also be greatly enhanced by wrecks. Cllr Loftus, a member of the local Grainne Uaile Sub-Aqua club since 1979, is now working with Mr Lease who is assessing the MV Shingle to see if it is suitable to sink.
