Thomas Brennan pleaded guilty to 58 charges but was spared a criminal conviction and jail
A pensioner "took advantage" of a Dublin shop owner away on bereavement leave when he helped himself to more than €6,000 worth of lottery tickets and snacks, a court has heard.
Dublin District Court heard he previously worked for the former owner of the Day to Day shop, on Baggot Road, in Cabra. He returned recently to the shop to assist the current proprietor, who had to go to Pakistan for six months due to the death of his brother. Judge Aine Clancy queried his motivation for the thefts and defence solicitor Conor McGreevy said his client, who had a clean record until now, had worked all his life. The solicitor conceded that it was surprising that he had committed these offences at this stage of his life. However, after he went back to help in the shop, he started taking snacks and lottery tickets.
His victim impact statement outlined how the thefts from his business occurred when he was out of the country because his brother had passed away.
