Shop Owner Shares Style Picks, Practical Gear and Daily Habits
Fashion, Workwear, Irish Retailers

The owner of Hark, a practical goods store, shares personal style preferences including French workwear jackets, Entourage of 7 glasses, a Marmot Guides down jacket and Casio Pro Trek watch. He discusses the importance of supporting Irish retailers online, his favourite sources for T-shirts and sneakers, and his shift away from US brands toward Irish and European designs. He also outlines his daily routines, favourite long-form content on YouTube such as Carl Rogers and The Rest Is Politics podcast, and habit changes inspired by Jesse Itzler's calendar including reading more and improving gym consistency.

I like clean, solid colours with minimal branding on show. My go-to outfit is a French workwear jacket (we stockI always invest in decent glasses.

Right now I am wearing Entourage of 7 glasses. I also have a Marmot Guides down jacket that gets a huge amount of use. Online for sneakers. As a shop owner, I think there’s a misconception around online shopping.

It’s an important channel for stores – shoppers just need to prioritise Irish retailers over buying directly from brand websites. For T-shirts, I love dropping into Tribe in St Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre. If I find an item I really like, I tend to stick with the design and pick it up in different colours when needed. I’m also making an effort to replace US brands with Irish designs and stores where possible and if not, then European ones.

My mantra is: “It’s only expensive if you don’t wear it. ”Practical stuff excites me. I picked up a Casio Pro Trek watch in Hong Kong in 2017: I use the stopwatch on it constantly, it has several alarms to let me know when to open and close the store. I am not precious about it: it’s a working tool, scratches add character.

I run Hark, a practical goods store. It’s a dream job really. I get to source pieces I think are useful and then I get to enjoy peoples’ reactions when they come back in and tell me how much they use each item. The people I have the opportunity to chat to makes it all a pleasure.

Youtube for long-form content like American psychologist Carl Rogers, Vox news reports and The Rest Is Politics podcast – they’re my go-tos at the moment. I put together my own version of Jesse Itzler’s Big A## Calendar and made a conscious effort to plan ahead. I’ve finished the first of my habit changes – to read more. Currently, I’m working on being better with the gym.
