'Such sad news for the lovely staff, for readers and browsers, devastating for the town'

After a remarkable 104 years of trading, the oldest book shop of its kind in the North West has announced its closure.

It has remained open continuously since then. Charles passed away in 1987, and the shop was taken over by Laurence Hardman, who began his career there as a floor sweeper in 1969. In a heartfelt message shared on X, Broadhurst Books declared: "We are incredibly sad to announce the permanent closure of Broadhurst's. All the booksellers have been made redundant, and the shop will no longer open for trading with immediate effect.Laurie Hardman, who took ownership after Charles' death, managed Broadhurst's until his own passing this year. He previously spoke to the ECHO with pride about bookshop's unique character.

"We have customers who came in as children by their parents and they have brought their children in and they have brought their children in so we get generations coming in who remember the building. So we have a continuity that customers enjoy. He continued: "The world changes very quickly these days. Ferris Bueller said 'life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
