The minister for the NDIS says an investigation may be needed following a Four Corners story that revealed children continued to be secluded in small, windowless rooms at a controversial autism service in Melbourne.
on Wednesday, Minister for the NDIS, Bill Shorten, said he was "perplexed" to discover that some of the practices continued into last year.
Asked why the regulator, the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, didn't penalise Irabina or take any action against the then-CEO, Mr Shorten said: "I was perplexed. I am told that there was action taken at the time to shut the program down … I can only go on what I was told". When it was suggested that an investigation was now required, Mr Shorten said: "If there's a difference to what I'm being told and what the facts of the matter actually are, yes, it will require some action".
"We want the evidence that Four Corners has got and put it to the commission to understand what's really happened.""I certainly don't think there's any place in the sector for people running this program."
