Education Minister Norma Foley this week revealed support from major mobile operators and huge take-up from schools and parents' associations for her plan to 'keep childhood smartphone free'

This week, Minister for Education Norma Foley revealed the support of major mobile providers in Ireland for her plan for voluntary agreements to ‘keep childhood smartphone free’.

The initiative gained public support this week from mobile operators Vodafone, Three, eir, Tesco Mobile, Virgin Media and An Post Mobile, representing 95 per cent of the mobile phone market in Ireland and a huge boost for the initiative.READ MORE: New Covid 'FLiRT' variant confirmed in Ireland - what to know and symptoms to look out for

In Greystones in Wicklow, meanwhile, eight primary schools and parents’ associations last year introduced an opt-in policy that allows parents to agree collectively not to purchase smartphones for their children, which was sparked by concerns about anxiety levels amongst students and is reported to have already had a huge impact.

Speaking earlier this week, Minister Foley said: “I am very encouraged by the positive response by parents and parents associations and I would like to commend them for all the work they have put in.
