Ultra processed foods now account for 61 per cent of the total mean energy intake of children aged two to five in the UK.
As Dr Chris Van Tulleken points out in his foreword to the report, food has always been a commodity. Ever since we discovered edible plants in savannahs and jungles, we have been adapting and presenting food in a way to make it more palatable and more attractive to its consumers.
Those foods are then packaged, marketed and shelved in supermarkets in a way to specifically attract the interest of small children. They are bright, they have cartoons on them, the packets crackle and rustle in a pleasing way. Once a child has tasted an 80 per cent banana smoothie that comes with a big red plastic nodule and a playing card attached, they are unlikely to fall on your cheese sandwich or slice of cucumber in quite the same way.
Parents are not the people to blame for the existence of these foods, nor for the fact that children want to eat them.
