“We all need to continue to champion Fred Shuttlesworth. The most important point is to make sure the youngest generation knows who he is,” Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said. The late civil rights leader is being honored 100 years after his birth.
The Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, a Baptist pastor who became Birmingham's foremost civil rights leader in the 1950s, was born on March 18, 1922. The City of Birmingham has proclaimed March 18 as Fred Shuttlesworth Day. Visitors flying into the Shuttlesworth-Birmingham International Airport may not know who the Rev. Fred Shuttleworth is, even though the airport bears his name.
On a tour of the institute, Shuttlesworth looms large in the story of the city’s civil rights history. Shuttlesworth was born in Montgomery County a century ago, on March 18, 1922, and grew up in Birmingham. He moved back to Birmingham from Cincinnati in 2007 and died in 2011. When the state outlawed the NAACP in 1956, Shuttlesworth created another civil rights organization, the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights. In 1957, he co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with King and other ministers.
