Cork siblings Thomas, Anna, Rachel and Niall McCarthy lost dad Patrick on May 1 last year

A family who converted an old double-decker bus into a holiday home after their dad’s suicide say he would be proud of their efforts.Reeling with shock they came home to the family farm at Ballinadee near Kinsale – and resolved to take on a project in his memory.

Thomas set his sights on buying an old jalopy when he saw what his friend Roisin in Dingle had done to convert one. He said: “As soon as I saw it done up I said, ‘I want one’. They were being sold very quickly on DoneDeal, I don’t know what people were buying them for.” The quirky berth features a “reading room” where the driver’s seat used to be, three bedrooms upstairs, and a state-of-the-art wet room to the rear of the vehicle.

Ballinadee Bus is one of the lockdown DIY projects which feature on Dermot Bannon’s Super Small Spaces which airs on RTE One tonight at 9.30pm.
