Smoking is the most common cause of lung cancer but some people who have never smoked a day in their life can also develop the potentially deadly disease.

. According to the NHS over 43,000 people are diagnosed every year and although old age and smoking is the most common cause, some people who have never smoked a day in their life can also develop the potentially deadly disease.- this is the most common form of lung cancer, with around 80 out of 100 cases being this type.

Treatment will depend on the type of cancer a person has been diagnosed with and also how far it has spread within the body. Early diagnosis could lead to surgery being the best option, but if surgery is unsuitable then radiotherapy and chemotherapy can be used. However, because there are often no noticeable symptoms until it is too late, the survival rate of lung cancer is much lower than other types of the disease. Around two in five people with the condition only live for one year after diagnosis, with one in 10 living at least 10 years.
