Former Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan criticised some of the decisions made by the Government during the pandemic in his new memoir.

Former Health Minister Simon Harris has said that Ireland “made the best decision that they possibly could have” during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In excerpts published by the Sunday Independent last weekend, Dr Holohan slated the government’s decision to reopen hospitality in 2020 in order to have a “meaningful Christmas”. He argued that there were over 1,500 deaths in January 2021, making it the single worst month for deaths. When asked about the comments on Monday, Minister Harris, who served as Health Minister at the start of the pandemic, said that “advisors advise and ministers decide”.“COVID-19 was an extraordinarily difficult time for successive governments,” he said.
