Sinn Féin has denied that it “silences" its members as a departing councillor announced he was resigning over clashes on immigration. Aidan Mullins, a Sinn Féin Councillor in Laois, announced on Wednesday that he had resigned from the party as he was “not happy with the direction the party is taking”.

“In relation to the resignation of Councillor Mullins, I'm very sorry that it has come to this situation,” he said. “Sinn Féin does not silence anybody in relation to their commentary. You will have heard comments from different people over the years in relation to that. That's part and parcel of a political party.

He added: “Our policy will develop over and over the years as needs arise. But in relation to the party that I joined 30 years ago, it’s the same party.” Sinn Féin described her as a “passionate advocate of women's health, access to affordable, decent, and adequate housing and living conditions”.
