Sinn Féin is facing a whirlwind of controversies this week, including a child sex abuse scandal, accusations of vetted questions, a resignation sparked by an inquiry, and a public war of words between Mary Lou McDonald and Brian Stanley.
Sinn Féin must have felt like this week was six weeks long as it attempted to bat away four different controversies simultaneously.
Public Accounts Committee Chair Brian Stanley announced he was leaving the party after being subjected to an inquiry that he said was akin to a “kangaroo court”. On Sunday, Sinn Féin responded, saying it has referred a complaint and a counter complaint to the Gardaí for investigation. So the messy affair and the “he said, she said” rumbles on. However, we still do not know what he and she are saying, as the nature of the allegations remains shrouded in secrecy, with neither side likely to let the cat out of the bag.
While everyone wishes him well, politicians believed this information should not have been withheld and, as Tánaiste Micheál Martin put it, “elaborately covered up”. It is clear from speaking to people in Sinn Féin this week that the atmosphere is not good. As the week wore on, tetchiness grew, and there was clear unhappiness over the level of questioning the party received about the myriad controversies continuing to dominate the news agenda.
