Ms McDonald and Ms O’Neill held a press conference in Dublin on Friday morning

President Mary Lou McDonald and Vice President and Northern Irish First Minister Michelle O’Neill both traditionally travel to the US capital for the celebrations and attend the Shamrock Ceremony at the White House.

However, there was doubt cast on whether or not they would attend this year due to US President Donald Trump’s recent comments on the Middle East, given Sinn Féin’s position on Gaza. In January, Ms McDonald said that while generally the party does travel to Washington DC for St Patrick’s Day, “we will see how things unfold”.

She added: “We are conscious of what is happening in the Middle East. We are conscious that the United States of America has to be part of the solution and can continue to be part of the problem in arming Israel.”Join the Irish Mirror’s breaking news service on WhatsApp. Click this link to receive breaking news and the latest headlines direct to your phone.
