The Dutchman, who spent three seasons at Old Trafford, managed 58 goals in 105 appearances for United.Advertisementfirst-team coach Rene Meulensteen has revealed how the transfer came about, and that Ferguson was not fond with the idea of bringing him to the club.
“He is not going to extend his contract, and he would like to stay in England in the Premier League, he wants to play for Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson.“So I walked into his office and said I have got this phone call, Robin van Persie is interested in joining us, what do you think?“Nah, he is too old, he was 27 at the time, bit of an injury sort of player.“I said I would look into it, I would not dismiss straight away, and discuss it with David Gill and see what you think.
“We found out it was very genuine and knew if was not going to be easy because of Arsenal and Arsene Wenger being there, losing one of their best players.Advertisement
