Tuesday marks World Drowning Prevention Day

The sisters of a man who died after drowning during a first date have paid touching tribute to a 'free-spirited human' who they said 'had a lifetime of knowledge about water'.

Haydn was also selected to train on the GBR national sailing squad and his name appears on a competition trophy along with Ben Ainslie. His sisters, Megan and Brogan, spoke out today - World Drowning Prevention Day - to hammer home life-saving water safety messages. "He knew so much about water and was so fit and strong and to lose Haydn to the water, although it was absolutely horrific, we hope that by raising awareness and spreading awareness in Haydn's memory and helping others to be more aware, then we can hopefully help prevent someone else from drowning."

"We have been doing the May Day mile and our local sailing club did a Haydn Griffiths RNLI trophy day, which the funds from that have gone to the RNLI and the lifesaving work they do. We have got our own Facebook group called Stay Safe For Haydn, where people share different stories and water safety messages.

"And if you do see someone in trouble, call 999 and ask for the coastguard. People sometimes panic and don't know who to call, they don't know what to do and if people do get stuck in the water - try to remain calm.Connor Wray, an RNLI volunteer at New Brighton, was on a rescue mission to find Haydn when he went missing. Connor also praised the "strength" of Haydn's sisters and the rest of his family.
