Rescue operations are underway after a pair of avalanches in Big Cottonwood Canyon Saturday afternoon.
BRIGHTON, Utah — Two skiers were caught and carried in a pair of avalanches in Big Cottonwood Canyon Saturday afternoon, with at least one having to be rescued.
The Utah Department of Transportation announced around 2:20 p.m. that the road through the canyon, State Route 190, was temporarily closed in both directions for an"avalanche recovery," but later corrected that it was a rescue operation.The Utah Avalanche Center said both avalanches occurred in the Silver Fork area. One skier was partially buried in one slide. In a separate avalanche about two miles away, one skier was caught, carried and buried.
Unified Police then gave an update to FOX 13 News that the buried skier had been dug out and was conscious. Officials said the slide occurred in the East Bowl area of Silver Fork around 12:20 p.m. Seven skiers were in the area, but only one — a man in his 50s — was buried.
