While the word acne may conjure up teenage memories of angst and squeezing blemishes frantically in front of a mirror, hormonal acne can affect adults of any age and is especially common in women.
A number of factors may contribute to this, including menstruation and menopause, and can be frustrating, especially when it seems to persist despite your best efforts. For many women, hormonal acne can be an annoying monthly recurring issue.Hormonal acne is influenced by hormonal imbalances in your body. It typically appears on the jaw, chin, neck, and upper back as pimples, blackheads and whiteheads. Hormonal acne is most common during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause.
It can be a sign of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome , which is a hormonal disorder that affects about 1 in 10 women of childbearing age. Elevated levels of male hormones - androgens like Testosterone - or a higher-than-average sensitivity to progesterone may lead to irregular menstrual cycles, excess hair growth, weight gain, ovarian cysts and hormonal acne. Not all women with PCOS will experience hormonal acne, and for those that do, its severity can vary.
It’s important to note that not everyone’s experience with hormonal acne is the same. All treatments need to be tailored for individual needs and acne severity, but a little common sense can go a long way in preventing hormonal and PCOS acne breakouts.
