While it may not be very intuitive, cleansing oils can be the tool for repairing a damaged skin barrier. Understanding how a cleansing oil does this involves understanding both the skin barrier structure and the composition of a cleansing oil. Let’s break this down – so you know what do to after too much sun at the beach. The skin barrier, or lipid barrier, is important for maintaining healthy skin.
Various factors such as harsh environmental conditions , excessive cleansing, or the use of unsuitable skincare products, can compromise the integrity of the skin barrier. In addition, underlying skin conditions such as eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, and acne negatively impact skin barrier integrity. When the skin barrier becomes compromised, the skin becomes more susceptible to dryness, irritation, and increased sensitivity.
If you are experiencing an issue with your skin, it’s most likely due to a compromised skin barrier. Visible signs of damage include dry/flaky skin, itchiness, inflammation/irritation, rough patches, little red dots, and sensitivity, especially when applying skincare products. After a sunburn, you may experience all of these. To better understand how a cleansing oil repairs the skin barrier, we look at its constituents.
To summarize, oil-based cleansers have the dual effect of supporting your skin barrier and reinforcing it. If a damaged skin barrier is a thin protective shield made of layers of lipids and bricks that has developed cracks due to its exposure UV or air pollution, the oil-based cleanser not only cleans dirt from the surface, but also seeps into these cracks, repairing and reinforcing the shield.
