Renee Slegers has been officially named the permanent head coach of Arsenal Women's after a successful interim period. The former Rosengard manager took over in October and has led the team to an impressive run of form, securing qualification for the Champions League quarter-finals.
Renee Slegers has been appointed as Arsenal's head coach on a permanent basis following a successful stint as interim head coach. Slegers, a 35-year-old Dutchwoman, took over the reins in October after Jonas Eidevall's departure and guided the team to an impressive unbeaten run of 10 victories and one draw across all competitions.
Her achievements include leading Arsenal to the Champions League quarter-finals as Group C winners and earning the Women's Super League manager of the month award for December. Slegers has signed a contract that extends through the 2025-26 season. She expressed her excitement about continuing the journey with the team, emphasizing the collective ownership and responsibility among players and staff. Slegers acknowledged the passionate support of the fans and vowed to deliver something beautiful and inspiring that leads to trophy wins. This week has seen managerial appointments for both club and country, with Carla Ward, the former Aston Villa boss, announced as the new Republic of Ireland Women's National Team head coach. Slegers' journey with Arsenal began in the summer of 2023 as an assistant coach after a two-year spell managing Rosengard in Sweden, where she led them to back-to-back league titles. A former midfielder with 55 caps for the Netherlands, Slegers previously had a stint at Arsenal's youth academy between 2006 and 2007 and played for Willem II in the Netherlands and Djurgardens and Linkoping in Sweden. Clare Wheatley, Arsenal's director of women's football, expressed delight in appointing Slegers as the permanent head coach, highlighting her exceptional performance as interim head coach, uniting the team, club, and supporters. Wheatley emphasized that Slegers was the standout candidate throughout a thorough recruitment process. She praised Slegers' understanding of the club's values and ambitions, gained from her experiences as both a young player and a coach. Wheatley expressed confidence that Slegers is the best person to lead Arsenal towards trophy success in the current season and beyond. Arsenal currently sits third in the Women's Super League, trailing leaders and defending champions Chelsea by seven points. They remain competitive in both the FA Cup and League Cup
