The 100-year hostelry now has 13,000 sq ft of panels on its roof
A leading Sligo hotel is set to cut its electricity bill by at least €25,000 a year after installing solar panels. The 100-year-old Sligo Park Hotel now has 13,000sq ft of panels on its roof.
While the PV solar panels will contribute less energy in winter months, it is estimated solar energy will make up 35-45 percent of the hotel's overall usage from April to September with the average contribution across the year projected to be more than 20 percent.
The environmentally-friendly initiative is not the hotel's first move towards supporting climate action and biodiversity. Earlier this year, Sligo Park Hotel opened a bug hotel and willow dome on its grounds to provide nesting sites for insects and other wildlife and educate young guests about the vital role of pollinators in the local ecosystem.
JV Tierney and Company Consulting Engineers engaged Cool Air Ltd to install the 400 PV solar panels across 13,000 sq ft of the building's roof between June and August this year and the PV solar panels began contributing to the hotel's energy use last month after being commissioned by the ESB.
