Sligo Rovers academy graduate, Aidan Gabbidon, has secured a move to Swedish giants Malmo, marking a significant step in his young career. The 16-year-old defender, who has represented Ireland at the Under-15 and Under-16 levels, has signed with the 2024 Allsvenskan champions. Rovers academy chief Conor O’Grady expressed pride in Gabbidon's achievement while acknowledging the bittersweet feeling of losing a promising talent.
Sligo Rovers academy chief Conor O’Grady has admitted to mixed emotions after losing Ireland underage international Aidan Gabbidon to Swedish champions Malmo . The 16-year-old has signed for the 2024 Allsvenskan winners with immediate effect - and the Bit O’ Red have received training compensation for the player. Gabbidon has played for Ireland at Under-15 and Under-16 levels. He arrived at Rovers in 2023 from Sligo/Leitrim side Valley Rovers.
O’Grady, a former Sligo Rovers player, said: “We wish Aidan all the best with his move to Malmo. He’s a superb defender with the potential to go as far as he wants in his career. He’s well-grounded, thanks in no small part to his mother and father. While it’s disappointing to lose him, this transfer demonstrates the quality of work being done in our academy. The fact that a top European club has scouted and signed one of our players is a testament to the efforts of his coaches throughout his journey—from Valley Rovers to the Rovers academy. This move underscores the clear pathway from local underage leagues to our League of Ireland academy and, ultimately, first-team football—whether here at Sligo Rovers or beyond. Aidan’s move proves that hard work never goes unnoticed.” Aidan’s brother, Kyle, is also a member of the academy at Sligo Rovers. The goalkeeper has also been capped at international level.
