Emile Smith Rowe was the standout performer for Arsenal in their EFL Cup win at Brentford on Wednesday night and he handed boss Mikel Arteta a selection dilemma
Kai Havertz was overshadowed by Emile Smith Rowe on the night where both Arsenal playmakers were looking to push their way into Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up.
The Gunners academy graduate started his first match in 499 days – since May 16 2022 – after a a season disrupted by injuries and fitness concerns. During a season in which Arsenal pushed for the league title, he became almost the club’s forgotten man due to his ill-fortune. Havertz has been ineffectual in his first nine matches for Arteta’s side, and is yet to find the net, but was restored to the starting line-up against Brentford after being named as a substitute in recent league games against Everton and Tottenham.
Instead it was Smith Rowe who produced a vibrant performance and he was the player that Gunners teammates looked to during attacks. He essentially carried out the role of Odegaard in orchestrating attacks and making the most out of pockets of space.
