on Saturday night was the future Hall of Famer firing fastballs for the Astros again and holding the Los Angeles Angels to one run in five innings.

"It was a long road, man," said Verlander, who allowed three hits and struck out seven on 80 pitches.A smiling Verlander turning into a total fan inside the Astros' clubhouse after a tough 2-0 defeat inside Angels Stadium. Then the fun part began. He was asked about facing Angels superstar pitcher/slugger Shohei Ohtani, who went 0 for 3 with three strikeouts against the Astros' ace."Just because I struck him out three times doesn't mean anything, really," Verlander said."This is baseball. He put some good swings on the ball. I made some good pitches against him. Especially in that big spot there in the last inning, a pitch that was right on the edge, really a borderline pitch.

Instead, Verlander sounded like a young fan holding a glove in the outfield stands during pregame batting practice or an overexcited kid trying to get a baseball card signed behind the dugout.how rare and unique Ohtani is"I got to say, Opening Day was the first time, because my last time pitching was , so I didn't see him," Verlander said."Well, I pitched one game in . So I haven't seen him, in person, pitch and hit – they weren't doing that the last I played.

Ohtani made history on Thursday during the Astros' 3-1 victory, when he started for the Angels on the mound, then led off in the same inning at the plate. Normally, Verlander would have opposed Ohtani. But with the Astros trying to get the most this season out of their 17-year veteran, Verlander was able to watch Opening Day from afar and instead started the Astros' third game of the series.
